4J Studios Introduces Rixels, a Breakthrough Technology Reducing Texture Memory Requirements by 98%
4J Studios, the developer behind Reforj, has introduced a groundbreaking technology called Rixels, offering a novel approach to texture rendering that significantly reduces memory requirements. The Dundee-based studio has submitted a patent application for this technology. Rixels, short for Reforj Pixels, are modified pixels that incorporate vector shapes, allowing them to retain their clarity even when viewed at close range. According to 4J Studios chairman Chris van der Kuyl, the development of Rixels was a response to the challenge of texture size, which was becoming a significant issue as the game's scope expanded. Van der Kuyl tasked CTO Richard Reavy with finding a solution, resulting in the creation of Rixels, each containing one of 23 vector shapes. Vector graphics, built using mathematical formulas, ensure that images remain sharp regardless of their size. Initially, the 512x512 pixel grids in 4J's Minecraft-like game Reforj required 4MB of memory, but with Rixels, the same grid can be rendered using 20x20 squares, consuming only 72KB of memory – a reduction of over 98%. This technology eliminates the fuzziness that occurs when zooming in on textures, instead revealing beautiful, high-resolution vector shapes. 4J has applied for a patent for Rixels, and van der Kuyl is surprised that this technology has not been used before, describing it as 'deceptively simple.' Rixels are being utilized in 4J's proprietary Elements Engine, which was developed to create sandbox games after years of porting Minecraft to consoles and handheld devices. The memory savings from using Rixels enable Reforj to maintain a consistent 60-frames-per-second performance, transforming the player's experience. Van der Kuyl is open to exploring potential licensing opportunities for Rixels, particularly in graphic design tools, and is eager to see how this technology can be applied in other contexts.
