Survey of Gamescom Dev Speakers Reveals AI's Potential Influence on Team Dynamics and Productivity
The annual survey of speakers at Gamescom Dev has been released, showing that a significant majority of 83% of respondents anticipate that AI will have an impact on either team structure or productivity. From the 100 surveyed speakers, almost half identified AI-assisted development as the most significant trend to watch in the industry for the next three years. Other notable trends included hardware and RAM prices at 28%, the creator economy at 7%, and user-generated content at 5%. A decrease was observed in the number of respondents who prefer minimal AI involvement in development, dropping to 30% from 33% in the previous year. Conversely, 34% of respondents believe that AI assistance would be most beneficial for code and production. When considering AI's impact on job roles, 36% of respondents believe it will lead to changes in roles rather than a reduction in team size. 33% anticipate smaller teams, while 14% expect an increase in individual output. 17% of respondents do not foresee a reduction in the workforce. Over half of the respondents identified economic uncertainty as the biggest challenge facing the industry, followed by market saturation at 38%, discoverability at 35%, and rising development costs at 30%. To address discoverability, respondents suggested that they would like to see greater transparency in platform algorithms, with 32% in favor, followed by improved storefront recommendations at 22%, and more curated editorial content at 21%. Looking ahead to the future, 37% of respondents see smaller development teams as the greatest opportunity. Community building and new publishing models both tied for second place at 15%. The respondents expressed varied opinions on the business or monetization model that would dominate the market over the next three years. The leading models were digital and physical premium games at 29%, followed by live service at 24%, and free-to-play with in-game items at 21%.
