According to digital intelligence firm Sensor Tower, a remarkable 89% of preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA6) are for the $100 ultimate edition, rather than the standard $80 edition. This trend holds true across both Xbox and PlayStation platforms, with 90% of Xbox preorders and 88.5% of PlayStation preorders opting for the ultimate edition. This unprecedented demand for the premium edition has surprised even industry experts, with Karl Kontus, SVP and GM of Video Game Insights at Sensor Tower, noting that he has never seen such a high premium share before. Kontus attributes this to the dedicated fan base that typically drives preorders, but also suggests that the pricing strategy and additional content offered in the ultimate edition have contributed to its popularity. As the game's launch approaches, Kontus expects the share of ultimate edition sales to decline, but still remain above industry standards. The success of the ultimate edition is likely due to the significant additional content it offers, including exclusive vehicle customization options and access to a custom mod shop. With 4.3 million preorders already recorded, the game is poised for a record-breaking launch, although Kontus cautions that predicting total sales is challenging due to the unique circumstances surrounding GTA6.
