Why Indie Game Developers Shouldn't Fear GTA6
Tomas Sala, the developer of ShipShaper, believes that indie game developers should not be intimidated by the release of GTA6. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sala expressed his thoughts on why he thinks GTA6 will not have a significant impact on indie games. He stated that GTA6 has its own unique audience that is not interested in playing indie games, and that the media's coverage of GTA6 will not affect the success of indie games. Sala also pointed out that many indie games are successful without receiving widespread media attention, and that they often find their own niche audience. He emphasized the importance of product/market fit, where developers should consider the scale of development and the potential audience size before starting a project. Sala also shared his own experience as a solo indie developer, where he has to be mindful of his finances and make careful decisions about which projects to pursue. He believes that being a solo developer requires a combination of creative freedom and business sense, and that it's essential to define one's own standards of success. Sala is currently working on ShipShaper, a boat-creation game that he hopes will appeal to a niche audience. He is also planning to develop an open-world sailing adventure set in the Falconeer universe, which he believes will be a commercial success and allow him to continue creating games that he is passionate about.
