2K Introduces Small Axe Studios, a New AAA Sports Game Development Team
Global gaming giant 2K has officially announced the establishment of Small Axe Studios, a premier AAA game development studio situated in Vancouver, Canada. Led by the experienced Aaron McHardy, the studio is currently working on 2K's upcoming sports franchise and is recruiting top talent for key positions. McHardy, who serves as the head of the studio, vice president, and executive producer, is joined by a seasoned leadership team comprising Gary Paterson, head of design, Tom Pan, head of operations, Mike Thompson, head of engineering, Brent Breedveld, animation director, Karl Gryc, art director, John Cruz, technical art director, and Trisha MacWan, head of HR. Notably, McHardy previously spearheaded the EA Sports FIFA team for 15 years until his departure in 2021. Other prominent EA veterans on the leadership team include Paterson, Pan, Thompson, and Cruz. Small Axe Studios evolved from 2K Sports Lab, which was founded in 2023 with a focus on research and development for future sports interactive entertainment games. According to 2K, 'the studio brings together the passion of a startup and the resources of 2K to redefine the future of sports video games.' By building upon the company's proven expertise with AAA franchises such as NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA Tour 2K, Small Axe Studios is well-positioned to make a significant impact. McHardy emphasized, 'our studio is dedicated to tackling the industry's most ambitious challenges, and our name reflects this bold approach: with a clear vision, unrelenting drive, and sharp focus, even a small axe can fell a giant tree.' He further expressed his pride in the assembled team and enthusiasm for the studio's future prospects.
