Veteran Xbox Figure Albert Penello Dies at 53
The gaming community is mourning the loss of Albert Penello, a veteran Xbox executive who passed away on December 31st at the age of 53, following a courageous battle with cancer. The news of his passing was shared on social media by Mike Ybarra, a fellow Microsoft alumnus, who revealed that Penello is survived by his wife, Dara, and daughter, Lily. Penello's illustrious career in the gaming industry began at Electronic Arts, where he worked as a product marketing manager from 1994 to 2000, contributing to notable franchises such as Need for Speed, Xena, and James Bond. He then joined Microsoft in 2000 and played a pivotal role in launching several iconic Xbox consoles, including the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox One S, as well as Kinect, during his nearly 18-year tenure. In 2018, Penello moved to Amazon, where he worked on the company's Luna games platform before becoming the principal technical product marketing manager for Amazon Web Services' Automotive division. Tributes have been pouring in from the gaming community, with Ybarra remembering Penello as a kind, passionate, and dedicated individual who always put gamers first. Larry Hryb, a Unity director of community and close friend of Penello, also paid his respects, describing him as a pillar of the gaming industry, a brilliant voice, and a loyal friend.
