Tragic Death of Vince Zampella, Visionary Game Developer and Studio Head
The gaming industry is mourning the loss of Vince Zampella, a renowned game developer and co-creator of the Call of Duty series, who tragically died in a car crash in California, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. The 55-year-old executive was driving a 2026 Ferrari 296 GTS on a mountain road north of Los Angeles when the vehicle crashed and caught fire, resulting in the loss of both the driver and passenger, according to the California Highway Patrol. At the time of his death, Zampella was serving as Executive Vice President at EA, overseeing the Battlefield franchise and Respawn Entertainment, the studio he co-founded with Jason West in 2010. Respawn Entertainment is known for producing iconic games such as Titanfall, Apex Legends, and Jedi Fallen Order. EA released a statement expressing their condolences, describing Zampella as a 'visionary creator' whose influence on the gaming industry was profound and far-reaching. He will be remembered for his contributions to the development of modern interactive entertainment, inspiring millions of players and developers worldwide. Zampella's legacy began when he co-founded Infinity Ward with Grant Collier and Jason West in 2002, leading to the creation of the highly successful Call of Duty franchise. After being fired from Infinity Ward in 2010, Zampella and West went on to form Respawn Entertainment, reuniting with EA to develop the Xbox One launch title Titanfall. Following West's departure from the studio in 2013, EA acquired Respawn in 2017, and Zampella rose to a senior role, taking charge of the Battlefield franchise in 2021 while maintaining his oversight of Respawn.
