Roblox Plans to Revamp Features for Russian Market Reentry

Following its ban, Roblox is exploring potential changes to facilitate its return to the Russian market. According to Reuters, via the Interfax news agency, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor has stated that the US-based gaming platform has expressed its readiness to adhere to local laws. Roskomnadzor noted that Roblox has pledged to remove harmful information, prevent criminal activities, and restrict user communications on the platform. The regulator indicated that if Roblox genuinely intends to prioritize children's online safety, it is open to engagement. Roblox has confirmed this development, stating its preparedness to temporarily restrict communication features in Russia and revise its content moderation processes to meet the necessary legal requirements for reinstating access to the platform. Although a return date has not been announced, Roblox's removal from the Russian market sparked significant outcry, including protests and letters to Vladimir Putin. A Roblox spokesperson emphasized the platform's commitment to user safety, with a range of proactive measures in place to prevent harmful content. The initial ban was imposed due to concerns over propaganda distribution and the promotion of extremist activities on the platform. Roblox has also faced bans in Iraq and Türkiye. The platform is not the only entity under scrutiny by Roskomnadzor, which recently requested that Valve, Apple, and Google remove a game featuring LGBTQ+ content, with Valve reportedly being the only company to comply.
