Creator of Katamari Damacy Returns to Japan Following Disappointing Sales of To a T
Keita Takahashi, the renowned developer behind Katamari Damacy, has relocated back to Japan due to the underwhelming commercial performance of his latest release, To a T. In an interview with GamesRadar, Takahashi expressed that his recent project, developed by Uvula studio and published by Annapurna Interactive in collaboration with accessibility charity AbleGamers, failed to meet sales expectations, prompting his move from San Francisco to Japan. Takahashi stated, 'I don't believe anyone intentionally sets out to create a niche game; it's simply a result. I'm aware my games deviate from the mainstream.' He continued, 'My recent return to Japan was partly due to To a T's poor sales. I acknowledge the risks of being independent and am willing to accept them. The question isn't about niche or traditional games, but rather whether people enjoy them.' Takahashi also expressed his desire to own the Katamari Damacy IP and shared his ideas for potential future projects within the series. He mentioned, 'I wish I had the Katamari Damacy IP. Nevertheless, I'm glad the game and characters remain beloved. I have some intriguing ideas for Katamari Damacy that only I could conceive. If I were to collaborate with Bandai Namco again, it would be a fascinating project.'
