Veteran Game Developer Bruce Straley Leaves Naughty Dog Due to Desire for Creative Ownership

In a recent interview, industry veteran Bruce Straley revealed that his departure from Naughty Dog was driven by a desire for creative control and new challenges. Straley, who worked on iconic titles such as Crash, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us, felt that he was answering the same questions and working on the same type of games repeatedly. This sense of repetition, coupled with the fact that he was investing immense effort into projects that weren't his own, led him to seek new opportunities. After leaving Naughty Dog in 2017, Straley opted not to join another AAA studio, citing the bureaucratic and cultural hurdles that come with it. Instead, he chose to go independent, announcing his new studio, Wildflower Interactive, in 2022. Straley's decision to venture out on his own was also motivated by his dissatisfaction with the lack of recognition for his work, as seen in the case of the recent The Last of Us TV show, where he felt he was not adequately credited for his role in co-creating the game's world and characters.
