Activision Shifts Call of Duty Release Strategy Amid Declining Player Numbers

Activision has announced a change in its release strategy for the Call of Duty series, following data that indicates a substantial decline in player numbers over the past 12 months. The decision comes after the latest installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, failed to attract as many players as its predecessors. According to data from Alinea Analytics, Black Ops 7 sold 401,000 units on Steam 26 days after its launch, compared to 2.3 million units sold by Black Ops 6 during the same period the previous year. Additionally, data from Video Game Insights suggests that the franchise has experienced a 50% year-over-year drop in player count. The game's poor reception from reviewers and players, combined with significant competition from other titles, has contributed to its underperformance. As a result, Activision has decided to move away from its traditional back-to-back release schedule for Modern Warfare and Black Ops games, opting for a more innovative approach to drive engagement and meaningful growth for the franchise.
