Tencent Takes a More Active Role in Guiding Its Owned Companies

Chinese conglomerate Tencent is exerting greater influence over the strategic direction of its owned companies, including Techland, Funcom, and Sumo Group, according to a report by Bloomberg. The company's games division CEO, Michelle Liu, stated that Tencent is taking a more assertive approach in guiding its subsidiaries, while respecting their creative autonomy. This is evident in the company's recent dealings with Poland's Techland, which Tencent acquired for $1.6 billion in 2024. Following the acquisition, Tencent embedded staff at the studio to provide support and guidance on strategy, including pricing for the release of Dying Light: The Beast. Similarly, Tencent has encouraged Norwegian studio Funcom to focus on its Dune: Awakening project, and has advised UK-based Sumo Group to concentrate on contract work for other studios, rather than developing original IP. Tencent's executives emphasize that the company's approach is collaborative, with a focus on providing support and expertise in areas like finance, production, and hiring, while allowing creative teams to maintain control over their projects.
