Eidos-Montréal Faces Additional Layoffs Amidst Restructuring
The Embracer-owned Eidos-Montréal studio, known for its work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, has reportedly undergone another round of layoffs. This comes after earlier cuts in March, with more than a dozen staff members let go in recent weeks. According to Insider Gaming, the threat of further redundancies looms over the remaining employees. Affected staff members have taken to LinkedIn to seek support, with one individual stating they are looking for a new design leadership role after being hit by the recent layoffs. Another post reveals that the design, production, writing, 3D art, concept art, and animation teams have been impacted. Employees have also disclosed that most projects at the company have been cancelled, with the studio's current focus on co-development work, such as its contributions to Microsoft's Grounded 2 and Fable. Eidos-Montréal is renowned for its work on the Deux Ex franchise, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. This is the second round of layoffs for the studio in the last year, following the departure of 75 staff in March and 97 workers at the beginning of 2024. The layoffs are part of Embracer's restructuring program, which was implemented after a $2 billion investment from Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group failed to materialize. The program has resulted in thousands of staff layoffs, project cancellations, and studio closures across the company. The news comes amidst a wave of layoffs in the gaming industry, with kids' licensed games specialist Outright announcing 27 job cuts and Sharkmob undergoing a restructuring scheme that has led to an undisclosed number of positions being cut.
