Hideo Kojima Set to Headline GDC Festival of Gaming 2026

Acclaimed game designer Hideo Kojima has been confirmed as the inaugural keynote speaker for the GDC Festival of Gaming 2026. His presentation, titled 'Restarting from Zero: A Message to Creators Considering Independence,' will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions, from its inception to the development of its groundbreaking game, Death Stranding. Kojima will delve into his personal journey, discussing the obstacles and creative rewards that come with starting anew, following his time at Konami where he pioneered the Metal Gear franchise. A recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2009 Game Developers Choice Awards, Kojima was recognized for his contributions to the stealth genre and innovative storytelling in games. According to GDC president Nina Brown, 'Hideo Kojima is a visionary creative force whose work has profoundly impacted the gaming experience.' Brown added, 'Having Kojima-san headline the GDC Festival of Gaming sets the tone for this new era, embracing fearless creativity, bold ideas, and elevating the game development ecosystem. His story embodies the spirit of reinvention that many in the industry are currently navigating.' The GDC Festival of Gaming is scheduled to take place in San Francisco from March 9 to March 13, next year. The event, formerly known as the Game Developer Conference, underwent a rebranding in September 2025. In an interview, Informa's executive director for innovation and growth, Mark DeLoura, reassured that the GDC remains 'by developers, for developers, and focused on developers,' with a renewed emphasis on engaging with the city in innovative ways.
