Spry Fox Regains Independence from Netflix
In a significant move, Netflix has sold Spry Fox, the development studio behind popular titles such as Cozy Grove and Alphabear, back to its original founders, David Edery and Daniel Cook. Although the sale marks the end of Netflix's ownership, the streaming giant will continue to publish Spry Fox's upcoming mobile game, Spirit Crossing. The studio is now free to explore publishing options for the game on other platforms. However, this newfound independence comes with the challenge of securing funding or achieving commercial success with Spirit Crossing, which requires a rework to incorporate monetization strategies. Edery expressed gratitude for the experience at Netflix and enthusiasm for bringing Spirit Crossing to a broader audience across multiple platforms. The sale marks a shift in Netflix's approach to the gaming industry, following changes in leadership and the closure of its California-based AAA studio, Team Blue, in 2024.
