Veteran Game Developer Ron Gilbert Abandons RPG Project Due to Insufficient Funding and Support

Renowned game developer Ron Gilbert has halted development on his unnamed RPG project, previously likened to a blend of classic Zelda, Diablo, and Thimbleweed Park. In a recent interview with Ars Technica, Gilbert discussed the challenges faced during production, including a minimal three-person team and inadequate funding support. He stated, 'I simply lacked the financial means and time to create a vast open-world game of that scope.' Gilbert noted that he had pitched the concept to publishers, but the proposed deals were unfavorable. 'The publishers' perception was not that our project would generate $100 million, making it unworthy of significant investment,' he explained. Gilbert expressed that publishers are now heavily driven by analytics, making it more difficult to pitch innovative ideas compared to when he began his career. 'They rely on formulas to predict a game's potential earnings, resulting in the creation of numerous games that resemble the previous year's releases, as that is a proven money-making strategy,' he said. 'In the past, we couldn't rely on such formulas, so we experimented more.' Gilbert expressed his appreciation for the indie game market, stating, 'I enjoy the indie scene because it's less constrained by the pressures and expectations that major publishers impose, allowing for more creativity, uniqueness, and experimentation.' The untitled RPG was announced in 2024 and had been in development for several months before being canceled, with a planned release in late 2024 or early 2025.
