Team Cherry Expresses Regret Over Silksong's Impact on Fellow Indie Releases
Australian game developer Team Cherry has expressed that it was regrettable how the launch of its highly anticipated game Hollow Knight: Silksong affected the release of other indie games. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ari Gibson of Team Cherry stated that the studio was rushing to finalize the game, with the developers themselves not knowing the release date until shortly before it was announced. Gibson mentioned, 'To some extent, that probably is unfortunate... We didn’t have a lot of control over our own date because we were rushing toward the end, working right up until the last point.' The game's release was so highly anticipated that other indie developers felt compelled to adjust their own release dates to avoid being overshadowed. The creative director of Hell is Us, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, described Team Cherry's move as 'callous', while Necrosoft delayed the release of Demonschool, citing that Silksong 'really did take over'. Upon its release, Silksong's immense popularity caused temporary outages on several digital storefronts, including Steam and the Nintendo eShop. Team Cherry's William Pellen found this surprising, saying, 'I didn’t even know that could happen.' Despite the chaos, the team is thrilled with the positive reaction to the game, which peaked at over half a million concurrent users on Steam.
