Cyberpunk 2077 Surpasses 35 Million Copies Sold to Date
To date, the dystopian sci-fi game Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 35 million copies, according to its developer and publisher, CD Projekt. Notably, the game has reached this milestone more quickly than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which sold over 30 million copies within six years. In contrast, Cyberpunk 2077 achieved this feat in just five years. Joint CEO MichaĆ Nowakowski emphasized that the figure of 35 million copies sold only accounts for direct sales and does not include players accessing the game through subscription services. Nowakowski expressed his pride in this achievement, stating, "This accomplishment not only underscores the strength of our franchise but also validates the effectiveness of our business strategy. We are committed to delivering high-quality, story-driven games that continue to sell well, supported by content updates that ensure our games remain engaging and evolve over time." In a separate address to investors, CFO Piotr Nielubowicz revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 is currently the company's main source of revenue. A review of CD Projekt's financial results for the third quarter shows that Cyberpunk 2077 and its Phantom Liberty expansion accounted for 72.4% of the company's total sales revenue. The company also provided updates on the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2, which is being developed in Boston. The project currently has a team of over 80 staff members, including developers who have previously worked on notable franchises such as Grand Theft Auto, God of War, World of Warcraft, and The Last of Us. Having established a senior team, CD Projekt is now focusing on hiring for mid-level roles as pre-production progresses. It is anticipated that the Boston Cyberpunk team will double in size within the next two years. Nowakowski commented on the establishment of the Boston-based Cyberpunk 2 team, saying, "This development has enabled us to work on two major AAA games simultaneously. Although it introduces some geographical and operational complexity, it brings a wealth of diverse experience, skills, and backgrounds to the table. We firmly believe that this investment will yield positive results in the future, elevating the next Cyberpunk experience to new heights." For the third quarter, CD Projekt reported sales revenue of PLN349 million ($95.7 million), representing a 53% increase year-over-year.
