Tekken Producer Katsuhiro Harada Discusses Disparity Between Fighting Game Tournament Earnings and Game Revenue
According to Katsuhiro Harada, executive producer of the Tekken series, the fighting game market has experienced significant growth, yet the substantial profits generated by tournament streaming do not translate to increased game sales. In a recent interview at Evo France, Harada noted that commercial metrics such as revenue and copies sold indicate a surge in the genre's popularity. However, he is more intrigued by the ecosystem that has developed around fighting games. Harada stated, "The current era of fighting games is often referred to as a golden age, but if we examine the key performance indicators, we can see that the genre as a whole has gained immense popularity in recent years." He cited the success of streamed fighting tournaments, where major companies invest heavily in advertisements and influencers earn substantial amounts from their streams. Nevertheless, the revenue from game sales does not reflect this trend. Harada expressed interest in observing how this dynamic may change, particularly with the introduction of pay-per-view events. The development process for new characters in the Tekken series is lengthy, often taking over a year. For instance, the creation of Miary Zo, a new character in Tekken 8, involved extensive research in Madagascar to ensure cultural authenticity. Since its release in February 2024, Tekken 8 has sold over three million copies within its first year.
