Crystal Dynamics Implements Third Round of Layoffs, Affecting 30 Staff Members

Crystal Dynamics has unveiled its third round of layoffs for the year, resulting in the departure of 30 employees across multiple departments and projects. In a LinkedIn post, the developer explained that this move is necessary to 'optimise the continued development' of its flagship Tomb Raider title and future endeavors, given the shifting realities of the industry. This development comes after Crystal Dynamics partnered with Amazon Games to publish the Tomb Raider game in 2022. The studio expressed gratitude to the affected employees for their contributions, assuring them of its commitment to providing support during the transition. The company also appreciated the continued backing of its players, colleagues, and partners. This latest round of layoffs follows previous ones in August and March, where the reasons cited included 'evolving business conditions' and the need to 'better align the current business with the studio's future success'. Crystal Dynamics had also collaborated with The Initiative on the Perfect Dark reboot before its cancellation. The recent layoffs at Microsoft, affecting several gaming divisions, and the restructuring at Embracer, resulting in 10 layoffs at Crystal Dynamics in September 2023, further highlight the challenges faced by the gaming industry.
