Roblox Unveils Expanded Intellectual Property Licensing Platform
Roblox has launched the next stage of its intellectual property licensing platform, which initially debuted with a limited number of partners. The company has transformed its license manager into a self-service platform for intellectual property holders, enabling any eligible owner to offer their property for use on Roblox and allowing eligible creators to apply for adaptation rights. According to Roblox, this shift towards a more open approach will bring greater diversity and flexibility to the platform, reinforcing its position as a premier destination for global intellectual property and creative development. Initially, the licensing manager was introduced with a handful of prominent intellectual property holders, including Sega, Netflix, Lionsgate, and Kodansha. Now, Roblox is extending an invitation to all eligible intellectual property holders to participate in the program. Since its introduction in July, the licensing platform has received over 1,500 license requests from creators seeking to utilize available intellectual properties. As a result, various experiences have been developed using popular franchises such as Squid Game, Twilight, Saw, Blue Lock, and Now You See Me. Notably, The Squid Game, developed by Mr Ducky Studio, has garnered over 1.6 million favorites, while Pocket Lobster's Blue Lock: Rivals has amassed four billion visits. In a previous conversation, Roblox Senior Director of Product Management Greg Hartrell discussed the company's plans to enable users to create experiences based on diverse intellectual properties, emphasizing that intellectual property holders maintain control over the licensing process.
