Sony's Expectations for Destiny 2 Fall Short Following Bungie Acquisition
Following its $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022, Sony has expressed that Destiny 2 has not met its expected sales and user engagement levels. This was revealed during the company's latest financial results, which included an impairment loss related to a portion of Bungie's assets tied to Destiny 2. According to Sony's CFO, Lin Tao, while improvements are being made, the business projection for Destiny 2 has been revised downward. Despite this, Sony's live service game segment has seen significant growth, accounting for over 40% of its first-party software revenue. The success of other titles, such as Ghost of Yōtei, which sold over 3.3 million units in its first month, has also been highlighted. Tao noted that Sony aims to strengthen its studio business and expand its IP franchises through continuous learning and improvement. The company has also reaffirmed its commitment to launching Marathon, its team-based shooter, within the current fiscal year, with Tao stating that Sony is 'fully dedicated to launching the title as scheduled.' Additionally, the CFO provided insights into the PlayStation 5's lifecycle, suggesting that it is only midway through its journey, with plans to further expand its capabilities. The future of console launches and successors remains under wraps, with Tao concluding that the company is not in a position to comment on such matters.
