Sweden's Gaming Industry Sees 6.8% Revenue Growth in 2024
In 2024, the Swedish gaming industry's domestic revenue climbed to SEK 37 billion ($4 billion), marking a 6.8% increase from the previous year. According to the Game Developer Index report by Dataspelsbranschen, total revenue, including international subsidiaries, reached SEK 73 billion ($7.7 billion). However, revenue from these subsidiaries decreased from SEK 42 billion ($4.4 billion) to SEK 36 billion ($3.8 billion) due to factors such as divestments and sales, notably by the Embracer Group. The top five gaming companies in Sweden are King, Mojang, Paradox Interactive, Embracer, and EA Dice, with ten of the largest companies generating revenues exceeding SEK 1 billion ($105.7 million) in 2024. Employment numbers in the industry remained relatively stable, with 9,130 people working full-time and an estimated 2,150 positions (23.5%) held by women. Despite layoffs affecting between 400 to 500 people as of October 2025, at least 230 new hires were reported during the same period. The number of gaming companies in Sweden grew by 9% to 1,101, with 105 new firms established in 2024, primarily located in the Stockholm region, Skåne, and Västra Götaland. The majority of these companies are solo enterprises or have fewer than five employees. According to Dataspelsbranschen managing director Per Strömbäck, '2024 was a challenging year with significant layoffs and closures, but despite economic cycles and rising interest rates, many Swedish game companies performed well, contributing to the industry's revenue growth.' Johanna Nylander, head of analytics at Dataspelsbranschen, added that 'despite being one of the toughest years for the industry, the figures for 2024 are pointing upwards, showcasing Sweden's ability to produce high-quality games loved by players worldwide.'
