Square Enix Initiates Mass Layoffs as Part of Restructuring Efforts to Centralize Development in Japan
Square Enix has embarked on a major restructuring initiative, redirecting resources away from international development studios, thereby putting over 100 jobs in jeopardy. According to a recently published internal presentation on the company's website, a 'comprehensive overhaul of the overseas publishing organization' is underway, aimed at bolstering global publishing capabilities and enhancing operational efficiency. As reported by IGN, this move is part of a broader strategy to consolidate its publishing business and focus on in-house game development in Japan. The company is currently informing staff in the UK and the US about potential redundancies, with approximately 137 jobs at risk in the UK, although the exact number in the US remains unknown. Square Enix stated, 'To enhance development capabilities from a group-wide perspective and optimize resource allocation for maximizing IP value, a thorough review of the development pipeline was conducted.' As a result, the decision was made to close overseas development studios and consolidate development functions in Japan. In a statement, Square Enix said, 'We are reorganizing our operations in North America and Europe to strengthen our development structure and drive a globally integrated marketing strategy.' The company acknowledged that this was a difficult decision made after careful consideration and analysis by its leadership to position the group for long-term growth. Square Enix expressed gratitude to the departing team members for their contributions and committed to treating them with respect and providing support during the transition period. However, the company did not disclose the total number of jobs at risk due to these plans.
