Nintendo Switch 2 Achieves Record-Breaking Global Sales in First Four Months

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record for the highest global sales of any Nintendo platform within the first four months of its release. In a briefing following the company's latest financial results, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the Switch 2's sales are growing at an unprecedented rate, surpassing any of the company's dedicated video game platforms in history. With 10.36 million units sold in its first four months, the Switch 2 has more than doubled the sales of the original Switch during the same period. Furukawa emphasized that Nintendo will prioritize ensuring a stable hardware supply by increasing production to meet the overwhelming demand. Looking ahead, the company will focus on developing software for the Switch 2 and expanding its business around the platform. Furukawa also confirmed that Nintendo will continue to sell the original Switch hardware, which has maintained a steady sales pace even after the launch of its successor. The company provided insights into consumer behavior, noting that 84% of Switch 2 users are transitioning from the original Switch, while 16% are new players. According to Furukawa, consumers who purchased the original Switch between its launch in 2017 and the release of the Switch 2 have been consistently migrating to the new console. In terms of software, Furukawa reported that approximately nine out of ten Switch 2 owners have played Mario Kart World, with 9.57 million units sold since the console's launch, including bundle sales and digital downloads. The console's second major first-party title, Donkey Kong Bananza, has sold 2.6 million units within the first 12 weeks of launch. Furukawa attributed the Switch 2's success to the strong support from third-party publishers, resulting in the largest third-party software lineup for any new Nintendo hardware. Nintendo reported significant gains for the first six months ended September 30, 2025, with sales increasing by 110% to ¥1.1 trillion ($7.2 billion) and operating profits rising by 19.5% to ¥145.1 billion ($950 million). The company has revised its full-year forecast, predicting net sales of ¥2.25 trillion ($14.6 billion, up 93.1%) and operating profits of ¥370 million ($2.4 billion, up 30.9%). It expects to sell 19 million Switch 2 units (up 26.7%) and 48 million software units (up 6.7%) by the end of the year.
