Tomonobu Itagaki, Visionary Creator of Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, Passes Away

The renowned developer Tomonobu Itagaki, best known for his work on the Dead or Alive series and the 2004 iteration of Ninja Gaiden, has sadly passed away at 58. The news was initially shared on his personal Facebook page and subsequently verified by members of the gaming community, although the cause of death remains undisclosed. A poignant Facebook post, penned by Itagaki himself to be published posthumously, was translated into English by his fellow developer and longtime rival, Katsuhiro Harada. Having joined Tecmo in 1992, he rose through the ranks to lead the development team, Team Ninja, and played a pivotal role in the creation of the first seven Dead or Alive games. Following his departure from Tecmo in 2008, Itagaki went on to establish Valhalla Game Studios, releasing titles such as Devil's Third and Momotaro Dentetsu 2017. Although his time at Valhalla came to a close in 2021, Itagaki's passion for gaming endured, as evidenced by the launch of Itagaki Games. His departure from Tecmo was marked by controversy, including a lawsuit over unpaid bonuses and allegations of sexual harassment, which were later rebutted by the company.
