Empowering Palestinian Game Developers: A New Initiative Takes Shape
A newly formed initiative, Palestinian Voices in Games, is working to empower Palestinian game developers by offering professional support and resources to help them overcome the challenges they face in the industry. The program, which involves over 50 games industry representatives, aims to combat the underrepresentation and dehumanization of Palestinians in the gaming world. Two Palestinian creators, Rasheed Abueideh and Yasmine Batniji, have already benefited from the program's support, which has helped them to refine their projects and secure additional resources. Abueideh's game, Dreams on a Pillow, is a 2.5D stealth adventure inspired by a historical Palestinian folk tale, while Batniji's game, Pomegranates, is a first-person, story-driven experience that brings destroyed landmarks back to life through digital archiving and 3D modelling. Both developers have expressed their gratitude for the program's support, which has helped them to bring their unique perspectives to the gaming world. Despite facing skepticism and controversy, the program's organizers remain committed to their mission, believing that by providing a platform for Palestinian voices to be heard, they can help to create a more inclusive and diverse gaming industry.
