Sequel to A Minecraft Movie Gets the Green Light for July 2027 Release
Warner Bros. has officially given the go-ahead for a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, with a scheduled release date of July 23, 2027. According to Variety, Jared Hess will be back in the director's chair and will also co-write the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. While details about the plot and cast are still under wraps, it has been announced that Jason Momoa will be producing the film, joined by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson. The first Minecraft movie, which premiered earlier this year, saw significant success with $157 million in domestic earnings and $301 million globally during its opening weekend, surpassing initial expectations of $70-80 million. By the end of its first month, it had generated $550 million globally and eventually ended its box office run with $957 million. A Minecraft Movie is the second highest-grossing film of 2025, with only Disney's Lilo and Stitch live remake taking the top spot with $1.03 billion. Recent research by Ampere Analysis found a 30% increase in Minecraft's monthly active users in April following the film's release, with 54% of these users being lapsed players. Experts have also weighed in on how the film's success could pave the way for more video game adaptations in Hollywood.
