Veteran ZeniMax Online Developers Launch Sackbird Studios
A team of ex-ZeniMax Online developers has unveiled the establishment of Sackbird Studios, an independent, self-funded, and employee-owned venture comprising fewer than ten individuals who contributed to Elder Scrolls Online and the long-gestating Project Blackbird MMO. Although the studio's inaugural title has not been announced, it is currently engaged in 'active development' of an original project for PC and console platforms. 'Our experience at ZeniMax Online Studios was invaluable, shaping us both professionally and personally,' stated CEO Lee Ridout. 'Upon learning of Project Blackbird's cancellation and the subsequent job losses, we felt compelled to act. We recognized that establishing a studio where creative autonomy is non-negotiable was the most effective means of protecting our craft and team.' COO David Worley elaborated, 'Following years of working in AAA development, we yearned for the freedom to take calculated risks without requiring approval or being driven by quarterly targets. As a fully employee-owned and funded entity, we are accountable solely to individuals who are passionate about gaming.' This development comes after Microsoft implemented widespread layoffs across its gaming division earlier this year, affecting over 9,000 employees, including personnel at ZeniMax Online Studios, and resulting in the closure of The Initiative and the cancellation of its Perfect Dark reboot, as well as the termination of Rare's Everwild and the reduction of Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 by half.
