Women Make Up Nearly Half of All Video Game Players, According to ESA Report
A recent study published by the Entertainment Software Association has found that almost half of the world's gamers are female. The 2025 Global Power of Play report, compiled in collaboration with trade associations across six continents, surveyed 24,216 active players aged 16 and above in 21 countries. The research, conducted by AudienceNet, indicates a significant shift in the demographics of the gaming community. According to ESA president Stanely Pierre-Louis, in 10 out of the 21 countries surveyed, there are more female players than male, with two additional countries showing an equal split. Brazil and South Africa are notable examples, with 57% and 58% of players being women, respectively. The report also highlights mobile devices as the preferred gaming platform, with 64% of women and nearly half of men opting for mobile gaming. Mobile devices are the most popular choice overall, with 55% of players preferring this platform, followed by PC, laptop, console, and handheld devices. The ESA's first Global Power of Play report in 2023 had a smaller sample size of 12 countries, but the latest report aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the global gaming community. Pierre-Louis emphasizes the importance of increasing the sample size to ensure an accurate representation of gamers worldwide. The report identifies 'having fun' as the primary reason for playing games, with 66% of respondents citing this as their motivation, followed by stress relief and mental stimulation. Players also reported that gaming improves various skills, including creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. The ESA notes that adaptability, critical thinking, and communication skills are also highly valued among respondents. Furthermore, half of the players surveyed believe that gaming has enhanced their professional and educational skills, while under half claim that it has influenced their career or educational path. The report aims to demonstrate the positive impact of gaming beyond entertainment, highlighting its ability to bring families together, aid in medical treatments, and influence various industries. Pierre-Louis hopes that the report will dispel outdated stereotypes about gamers and showcase the numerous benefits of gaming. Ultimately, the ESA wants to emphasize that billions of people worldwide engage in gaming, and despite differences in preferences and platforms, everyone can experience the benefits of gaming.
