Microsoft Aims to Justify Xbox Game Pass Price Hikes by Enhancing Value
Microsoft has expressed understanding that price hikes are generally unpopular, following the company's decision to increase the cost of its Xbox Game Pass tiers. In an interview with The Verge, Dustin Blackwell, Microsoft's director of gaming and platform communications, stated that the company is attempting to bolster its offerings by incorporating additional value into the plans, concurrent with the price increases. "We recognize that price increases are not taken lightly, and we are attentive to player and community feedback in our efforts to provide more of what they are asking for," he said. Earlier in the week, the company announced a price increase for its top-tier Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, from $19.99/£14.99 to $29.99/£22.99 per month. The firm also announced price rises for Xbox Game Pass Standard, now renamed Xbox Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass. Blackwell pointed out that the price increases reflect the additional content that has been added to the service, specifically the Ultimate tier. "The Ultimate tier will now provide access to over 400 titles globally, including the majority of our partners who wish to continue releasing their future games on Xbox Game Pass," he noted. "We are also now offering access to more than 75 day-one releases annually, representing a 50 percent increase over the day-one titles we provided last year." Last week, Microsoft also announced that it would be increasing the prices of its Xbox Series X|S consoles in the United States for the second time. The price hikes will range from $20 to $70 across its hardware lineup.
