Funcom, Developer of Dune: Awakening, Announces Staff Reductions

Funcom, the Oslo-based game development studio behind the recently launched Dune: Awakening, has announced that it will be undergoing a restructuring process, resulting in staff layoffs. In a statement, the developer noted that Dune: Awakening has been its most successful release in its 32-year history, but to ensure the game's continued success and prepare for a major console release next year, the studio must reorganize its teams and allocate resources more efficiently. This transition from development to long-term operation will involve focusing internal resources on releasing new content, features, and enhancements. Unfortunately, this restructuring will result in the departure of some cherished colleagues. The exact impact of the layoffs is currently unknown, and Funcom is working to support affected employees and find them new opportunities. Dune: Awakening achieved one million players within two weeks of its PC launch in June and is scheduled to be released on PS5 and Xbox next year. Funcom was acquired by Tencent in 2020, and the Chinese gaming giant has been providing support and expertise to help the studio scale and reach a broader audience.
