UK Game Developer Splash Damage Gains Independence from Tencent
In a significant development, Splash Damage, the UK-based game development studio, has parted ways with its former owner, the Chinese gaming giant Tencent, following its acquisition by private-equity investors. The studio, known for its expertise in crafting engaging multiplayer experiences, will continue to operate under the guidance of its existing leadership team. However, the company has opted not to provide further commentary on this matter at present. Founded in 2001, Splash Damage initially gained recognition for its work on the Wolfenstein expansion Enemy Territory. The studio later collaborated with Microsoft on several titles within the Gears of War franchise. In 2016, Splash Damage was acquired by Leyou, a Chinese firm that had previously invested in Digital Extremes, the developer of Warframe. Tencent subsequently purchased Leyou Technologies in 2020 for approximately $1.3 billion, thereby adding Splash Damage to its diverse portfolio of game development studios. Despite the change in ownership, Splash Damage's CEO, Richard Jolly, expressed enthusiasm about the studio's future prospects in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz in 2021. "We have ambitious plans for the next decade, which we can now accelerate," he stated. The following year, the studio announced its involvement in the development of Transformers: Reactivate, and in 2023, it revealed an open-world survival game codenamed Project Astrid. However, the cancellation of Transformers: Reactivate was announced earlier this year, potentially impacting several roles within the studio. In a recent interview, Yong-yi Zhu, VP and head of business operations, strategy, and compliance at Tencent Games, reaffirmed the company's commitment to its Western studios, citing no plans for withdrawal but acknowledging potential adjustments in investment due to industry dynamics.
