Starbreeze Entertainment Introduces Payday 2 Subscription Model on Steam
As part of the 12th anniversary of the Payday franchise, Starbreeze has rolled out a subscription service for Payday 2 on the Steam platform. The service, announced on September 24, 2025, allows players to access all available downloadable content for a monthly fee of $4.99 or a six-month subscription for $19.99, with the flexibility to cancel at any time. Gustav Nisser, head of commercial at Starbreeze Entertainment, noted in a press release that the subscription service is designed to give players more choices and make it easier for them to enjoy the game's extensive content. The service complements the existing option to purchase DLCs individually, providing players with greater flexibility in how they experience the game. This development comes after Starbreeze Entertainment released its Q2 2025 interim report, which showed a 64% increase in profits for the quarter but still resulted in a loss of SEK 25.4 million. The report also revealed that while Payday 2 and Payday 3 sales were down year-over-year for the quarter, they had increased for the first six months of 2025. The company has since decided to focus its efforts on the Payday franchise and internal projects, citing the importance of having a beloved IP in a crowded market.
