Game Developer Conference Evolves into GDC Festival of Gaming: Adapting to a Changing Industry

The Game Developer Conference has undergone a rebranding and will now be known as the GDC Festival of Gaming, with its next event scheduled to take place from March 9-13, 2026, in San Francisco, California. The organization announced this change on social media, stating that it is 'changing the game' as the industry itself is evolving. The shift is attributed to the transforming landscape of the gaming world, where budgets are tighter, attention is more fragmented, and discovery has become increasingly challenging. The introduction of new technologies and tools has also redefined the landscape of game creation. As a result, the community requires more connection, visibility, and support. The GDC Festival of Gaming has been designed to meet these needs by bringing the entire industry together at a critical moment, promising more connection, opportunity, and relevance. The event will feature a new pass structure starting from March 2026, offering 'more access' without any trade-offs, making full access the standard rather than the exception. The Festival Pass will replace the All Access pass at a significantly lower price, with discounts available for start-ups and academics. The upcoming GDC Festival of Gaming is set to take place from March 9, 2026, to March 13, 2026, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The previous Game Developers Conference saw an attendance of nearly 30,000 people, matching the 2024 figure, and witnessed an increase in exhibitors from 325 to 400. Over 1,000 speakers participated in the event, which included 750 sessions, workshops, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities. The 2025 GDC also introduced the inaugural GDC Nights after-hours event, which attracted over 6,000 attendees on March 17 and March 20.
