New Leadership Takes the Helm at IGDA

Following the conclusion of Zak Whaley's term in June, Limpho Moeti has been appointed as the chair of the International Game Developers Association, becoming the organization's first chair from the global south. With nearly a decade of experience in the South African gaming industry, Moeti has worked with various companies, including indie studio Freelives, and has co-created the Cape Town-based game event Playtopia. She has also been involved in the South African gaming community, organizing game jams and speaking at events. Moeti's vision for the industry is centered around creating a sustainable and representative sector, stating, 'I'm deeply passionate about growing industries, creating a long-term industry that is reflective of the country and its diverse population.' The IGDA has also announced new executive appointments, including Nazih Fares as vice chair, Mafalda Duarte as secretary, and Tim Cullings as treasurer. The organization's current priorities include expanding its mentorship programs, forming new partnerships, and developing initiatives to support game developers. According to Dr. Jakin Vela, IGDA executive director, 'The new leadership brings a unique approach to supporting the organization, and their expertise will strengthen IGDA's global connections and expand mentorship offerings.' Moeti expressed her commitment to championing inclusivity, sustainability, and opportunities for all game creators, stating, 'The IGDA is vital for those historically underserved, and we will continue to empower game developers at every stage of their careers.'
