Balatro Update Delayed as Developer Shifts to Hobbyist Pace
The highly anticipated 1.1 update for Balatro has been delayed, with its creator LocalThunk adopting a more relaxed approach to development. In a recent post, LocalThunk explained that they have returned to working on the game at a pace similar to when it was first started, dedicating only a few hours per day and not adhering to a strict schedule. This decision comes after the developer experienced burnout following the game's release in February 2024. LocalThunk expressed a desire to avoid the stress and crunch that comes with professional game development, instead opting for a slower and more enjoyable process. The update, which was initially expected to be released by the end of 2025, will now be completed when it's done, according to LocalThunk. The developer remains committed to the game and is excited about its future, having recently achieved 100% of the achievements in Balatro and looking forward to trying to do so again when the 1.1 update is ready. Despite the delay, LocalThunk's approach has been shaped by their experience with the game's massive success, including grossing $1 million within eight hours of its release and winning numerous awards, such as Game of the Year at the Game Developers' Choice Awards 2025 and Best Debut Game at the BAFTA Game Awards 2025.
