Charity in Challenging Times: How the Gaming Industry Can Make a Difference

As the charitable gaming and creators community manager for Make-A-Wish International, I've witnessed firsthand the profound impact video games can have on children with critical illnesses. These games often serve as a lifeline, providing a sense of connection and normalcy during a time of fear, anxiety, and isolation. The online gaming community offers a unique opportunity for these children to join friends and family in games, providing a much-needed escape from their circumstances. Moreover, games can be a powerful tool for charities, allowing them to captivate, engage, and inform players, driving fundraising, awareness, and education. At Make-A-Wish International, we've been creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses since 1980, with over 615,000 wishes granted to date. Game-oriented wishes are becoming increasingly popular, but the industry's support is not keeping pace with demand. There's immense potential for games to deliver transformative experiences to children with critical illnesses. For instance, we recently supported a child who couldn't travel but was able to virtually spend hours with his favorite game's development team, even inviting friends to join him. Another child's wish for a unique in-game skin not only made his dreams a reality but also raised millions for our charity and others. Gaming is the fastest-growing category of wishes, with studio visits, game development, and even simple wishes having a profound impact. The story of Kamahri, a nine-year-old from Canada, is a testament to this. Diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two, Kamahri's love for technology and gaming helped him cope with his illness. After going into remission, his wish to create his own gaming corner in his bedroom was fulfilled, bringing him immense joy. Despite the challenges, we believe that the gaming industry can make a significant difference in the lives of these children. By partnering with us, game developers and publishers can not only bring happiness to children with critical illnesses but also engage their communities, boost team morale, and spawn new creative ideas. We understand the realities of modern production cycles and industry volatility, but we're eager to work with the gaming industry to facilitate wish granting that doesn't disrupt production. Our goal is to grant 30,000 wishes annually by 2030, and we believe that the gaming industry is essential to helping us achieve this target. We've recently partnered with Raptor PR to raise awareness about our efforts in gaming and invite interested parties to reach out and explore how they can get involved.
