California Bears the Brunt of Games Industry Layoffs, Accounting for Over 50% of Cuts
The games industry is currently grappling with widespread layoffs, and according to Amir Satvat, more than half of these job cuts have occurred in California. Satvat, who serves as the business development director at Tencent Games and manages a community of resources for individuals affected by layoffs, notes that the US has been disproportionately affected, with over 70% of layoffs happening in North America. Despite this, Satvat points out that overall employment in the industry has increased since the pre-pandemic era. However, he advises games professionals to explore non-game roles to secure new jobs, given the significant cuts in the US, particularly in AAA studios. Satvat remains optimistic about the industry's future, especially in co-development and ex-development, citing the growing games market and the ease of self-starting and self-publishing. He believes that while the traditional AAA standard may be challenging to meet, there are new opportunities emerging that did not exist before.
