Firaxis Games Undergoes Staff Reduction, Says 2K

2K has verified that Firaxis, the development studio behind Civilization and XCOM, is undergoing a headcount reduction. The exact number of affected developers remains unclear, but reports suggest that the restructuring impacts numerous employees, with several confirming their layoffs on LinkedIn. Neither Firaxis nor 2K has publicly addressed the layoffs on their social media platforms or provided details on how the cuts will affect their recent release, Civilization 7, which launched in February. A 2K spokesperson stated that the staff reduction is part of Firaxis' effort to restructure and optimize for better adaptability, collaboration, and creativity. Despite the parent company Take-Two Interactive reporting a 16% increase in net bookings, reaching $1.42 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year, the cuts have been made. This brings the total number of developers who have lost their jobs in 2025 to approximately 4400, although this figure does not include instances where studios have not publicly disclosed the number of staff made redundant.
