Roblox Collaborates with International Age Rating Coalition to Introduce New Maturity Labels
Roblox has formed a partnership with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to overhaul its existing maturity labels. As a result, experiences will now be categorized using global rating systems, including the ESRB in the US, GRAC in South Korea, USK in Germany, and PEGI in Europe and the UK. According to IARC chairperson and ESRB president Patricia Vance, "Providing parents with trusted and recognizable ratings, regardless of their location, is highly beneficial given the large number of families engaging with Roblox." The streamlined global process will enable Roblox creators to efficiently obtain age and content ratings while informing parents about the content their children may encounter before they start playing. By the end of 2025, Roblox will expand its age estimation for communication to all users. This development follows the platform's investment in facial age estimation technology in July. As stated by Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman, "By combining facial age estimation technology, ID age verification, and verified parental consent, we can determine a user's age more accurately than relying on self-reported information during account creation." With this expansion, the platform will introduce new systems to restrict communication between adults and minors. In April, Roblox introduced a 'Sensitive Issues' content tag for experiences primarily focused on sensitive social, political, or religious issues. Experiences with this tag are inaccessible to players under 13, although parents can choose to grant access. Last year, Roblox implemented several changes to its safety systems and parental controls, including remote account management for parents, content labels, increased moderation, and restricted access to social hangouts and free-form user creation.
