High PS5 Price Tag Contributes to Sluggish Sales of Monster Hunter Wilds, Says Capcom President
According to Capcom's president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the steep price of the PlayStation 5 has hindered sales of Monster Hunter Wilds. In a recent interview with Nikkei Gaming, Tsujimoto reflected on the game's initial success, having sold eight million copies within three days, thus becoming the fastest-selling title in Capcom's history. However, the company's latest financial reports described sales of Monster Hunter Wilds as 'soft', with 477,000 units sold in Q1 2025, bringing total sales to 10.6 million units. Tsujimoto pointed to the high cost of the PlayStation 5, coupled with subscription fees and the $70 game price, as a significant barrier for many consumers. 'The console itself costs around ¥80,000 ($538)', he noted, 'and when you add the cost of software and monthly subscriptions, the total comes out to around ¥100,000 ($672) at the time of purchase. This is a sum that is difficult for many to afford, especially among younger generations, and it's a trend that is not unique to Japan, but is also observed overseas.' Tsujimoto stated that Capcom is currently developing a strategy to boost sales of Monster Hunter Wilds throughout the remainder of the year. In the same interview, he also discussed the success of the Switch 2, which is priced at ¥48,980 ($329), saying 'the response exceeded our expectations', and adding that 'while prices vary by country, this reaffirms the high level of cost-consciousness among ordinary consumers.'
