Hollow Knight Achieves Record-Breaking 71,000 Concurrent Steam Players
A new milestone has been reached by Hollow Knight, with over 71,000 players accessing the game simultaneously on Steam, just before the launch of its highly anticipated sequel. According to SteamDB, the previous peak of 56,192 players occurred on August 29, 2025. Following the announcement of Silksong's release at Gamescom, the game drew 21,000 concurrent players the next day. Prior to these recent achievements, the game's highest concurrent player count was 20,000, recorded in May 2022. It is essential to note that these figures only account for Steam players, as Hollow Knight is available on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox. After Silksong's announcement, nearly five million people added the sequel to their Steam wishlist, as reported by Alinea Analytics. In an interview with Bloomberg, Team Cherry co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen discussed the seven-year development cycle of the game, confirming that Silksong was never stalled and that game development is a time-consuming process. "Our creativity is the driving force behind the game," Gibson stated. "It was always progressing, even if it seemed slow. As a small team, we know that game development takes time. There were no major controversies or setbacks; it's just that games require a lot of time to make." The co-founders also revealed that Silksong was initially intended to be an expansion of Hollow Knight but evolved into a standalone game during development. "We're always working on new ideas, areas, and bosses," Pellen added. "It's enjoyable, but we have to stop at some point to complete the game. We could have continued, but we chose to draw the line somewhere."
