European Gaming Revenue Soars to 90% Digital in 2024
The European gaming industry witnessed a notable surge in revenue in 2024, with digital purchases comprising 90% of total revenue, according to a recent report by Video Games Europe and the European Games Developer Federation. This growth is attributed to a 4% year-on-year increase in gaming sector revenue across five key European markets, which rose from €25.7 billion in 2023 to €26.8 billion in 2024. The report, compiled using data from Ipsos, Game Sales Data, and industry members, highlights the sector's successful digital transformation. Smartphone and tablet gaming led the charge, accounting for 44% of revenue and 71% of players in 2024. Console gaming, however, saw a decline in revenue, despite an increase in player numbers. The report also reveals that European gamers spent an average of nine hours per week playing games, with 54% of the population engaging in gaming activities. Furthermore, the industry workforce experienced a slight increase, with women making up 45% of players and 24.9% of the workforce. Industry leaders are calling for recognition of the sector's distinct needs and strategic growth potential, backed by the right policy environment, to drive innovation and lead the global digital transition.
