Bungie CEO Pete Parsons Departs, Justin Truman Takes the Helm

After nearly a decade at the helm, Pete Parsons has announced his departure from Bungie, with Justin Truman, the company's chief development officer, set to take over as CEO. Parsons shared the news in a blog post, highlighting his accomplishments during his tenure, including the launch of Destiny 2, Bungie's exit from Activision in 2019, and the studio's acquisition by Sony for $3.6 billion in 2022. Parsons initially joined Bungie in 2002 as an executive producer and studio manager, working on notable titles such as Halo 2 and Halo 3. He took over as CEO in 2016, following the departure of Harold Ryan. Parsons expressed his confidence in Truman, citing his passion for the games, the team, and the players, as well as his instrumental role in bringing memorable moments to life in Bungie's history. Truman, in a statement, reflected on Bungie's successes and failures, emphasizing the importance of listening to the community and learning from mistakes. He also mentioned that the team is currently working on Marathon and Destiny, with more to be revealed later this year. Parsons' tenure was not without challenges, including claims of sexism, racism, and systemic discrimination, as well as waves of layoffs, including a significant reduction in headcount last July. The company has also faced delays, including the postponement of its upcoming title Marathon, which is now expected to launch within the current fiscal year. As Bungie becomes more integrated into PlayStation Studios, Sony's chief financial officer, Lin Tao, confirmed that the studio is shifting away from its independent status and becoming a more integral part of the PlayStation ecosystem.
