Gamescom 2025 Officially Kicks Off with German Politicians
On August 20, 2025, prominent German politicians formally inaugurated Gamescom, emphasizing the significance of the event and the gaming industry. The ceremony was attended by notable figures such as Dorothee Bär, Germany's federal minister for video games; Hendrik Wüst, minister-president of North Rhine-Westphalia; and Henriette Reker, mayor of Cologne and chairwoman of the Koelnmesse supervisory board. In their addresses, the speakers underscored the importance of Gamescom and the gaming industry, while highlighting the policymakers' objective of establishing Germany as a leading global gaming destination. Bär stated, "The gaming sector possesses immense cultural, economic, and technological potential, which is showcased at Gamescom every year. To enhance our gaming location's international competitiveness, I am committed to making games funding more predictable and reliable. As an initial step, funding will be more than doubled, and we are working towards introducing tax incentives, similar to those implemented in other countries." Wüst added, "With its exceptional developer studios and the world's premier video game event, North Rhine-Westphalia is the top gaming state. The long-term commitment of Gamescom to Cologne sends a strong signal for North Rhine-Westphalia, where innovations are developed, driving the entire economy forward. Video games create employment opportunities, foster creative thinking, and connect people across borders. North Rhine-Westphalia is paving the way, having developed a modern and market-oriented games funding guideline that focuses on small, emerging projects, as start-ups are vital to the growth and vibrancy of the games ecosystem."
