Steam Introduces Language-Specific Ratings for Enhanced User Reviews

Valve has revamped the Steam review system to provide language-specific ratings, aiming to give users a more accurate representation of a game's quality. The update, announced on August 18, 2025, enables users to see reviews calculated from their native language for select games, as part of Valve's ongoing effort to improve the reliability of Steam user reviews. Previously, Steam would calculate an overall review score based on reviews from all over the world. However, with this update, users will now see a language-specific review score when a game has more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews, including at least 200 reviews in a single language. Valve intentionally set these thresholds high to ensure confidence in the language-specific scores. This change means that different languages may display varying review scores for the same game, providing a more nuanced understanding of user sentiment. The new system calculates an overall score based on reviews in the user's primary language, which is displayed where the all-reviews score was previously shown. Users can still access the overall global score and language breakdown by selecting the language option at the top of the reviews section. While language-specific reviews are enabled by default, users can opt to revert to the old system in their settings. Valve emphasized the importance of transparency and trust in the review system, allowing users to customize their review preferences and access raw reviews in various ways.
