Blizzard Division Embraces Unionization to Safeguard Its Creative Identity

In a significant move, the story and franchise development division at Blizzard has opted for unionization, aligning with approximately 3,000 workers at Microsoft-owned studios who are already part of the Communications Workers of America (CWA). The decision was made through a strong vote in favor of union representation, with Microsoft acknowledging the union. The team, responsible for in-house cinematics, animation, and narrative content, including trailers and in-game cutscenes for Blizzard franchises, has set a new standard for the video game industry. According to CWA Local 9510 president Jason Justice, this unionization is a crucial step towards giving every worker a voice in shaping their work conditions. A principal editor and member of the organizing committee, Bucky Fisk, expressed that after over a decade at Blizzard, the company's stability has been waning, but with a union, they can preserve the special aspects of their workplace, secure transparency, and ensure fair policy application. This development follows a complaint filed by unionized workers at Raven Software against the studio and its parent companies for allegedly refusing to bargain, but a historic contract was recently secured with Microsoft.
