Annual Gaming Spend in North America Reaches $325 Per Player
A recent study has revealed that gamers in North America spend an average of $325 per year on gaming, making up 28% of the global gaming market. Published by Newzoo and Tebex on August 12, 2025, the report analyzes player behavior and spending trends in Western markets. The findings indicate a slowdown in payer growth, with a 1.1% compound annual growth rate in North America and 3.1% in Europe between 2023 and 2027, prompting the recommendation to focus on maximizing value from existing players rather than acquiring new ones. The global gaming market size is valued at $189 billion, with North America and Europe accounting for 46% of global spending despite housing only 20% of players. The report highlights significant differences in spending patterns between regions, with North American players spending an average of $325 per year, compared to $125 in Europe. Western gamers spend more than three times what Eastern gamers do on average, with cumulative spending at $170 compared to $51.60. The motivations behind player spending also vary, with 34% of North American players spending money to unlock exclusive content and 29% on personalization and character customization. In contrast, European players prioritize deals and offers, with 28% valuing ad-free experiences. The report suggests that offering discounted bundles and subscription models can increase conversion in Europe. The research also reveals diversity in player spending patterns between regions, with North American players investing in content packs, power-ups, and in-game currencies, while European gamers spend the most on in-game currencies and content packs. Microtransactions drive a significant portion of PC and console revenue in both regions, with shooters being the favored genre in North America and sports in Europe. The report recommends offering alternative payment methods to increase average transaction value in Western markets. According to Liam Wiltshire, Tebex's head of payments and compliance, 'Today’s players want to know what they’re paying for – and why. How you monetize matters more than ever.'
