Duolingo Expands Its Reach with Acquisition of Music Gaming Startup NextBeat

Duolingo, a leading language learning platform, has announced its acquisition of NextBeat, the developer behind the popular music game Beatstar. This strategic move aims to enhance Duolingo's music course, making it as engaging and enjoyable as top mobile games. The acquisition brings NextBeat's team of 23 experts in game design, user retention, and music licensing on board, poised to drive the next phase of Duolingo's interactive learning experiences. This deal also marks Duolingo's first official foray into the UK market. According to Duolingo's Chief Business Officer, Bob Meese, 'Learning should be as captivating as playing a great game.' He views the acquisition as a 'strategic bet on talent,' leveraging NextBeat's expertise to make Duolingo's platform more immersive and effective. NextBeat's CEO, Simon Hade, shared that the values of both companies align, focusing on learner-centric design and a passion for music and play. The acquisition is expected to bring NextBeat's portfolio, including Beatstar and potentially Country Star, under Duolingo's umbrella, further expanding its offerings.
